April 22, (THEWILL)- Paris Saint-Germain took a significant step towards clinching the Ligue 1 title as they cruised past Olympique Lyonnais 4-1 at the Parc des Princes. With star striker, Kylian Mbappe, rested, Luis Enrique’s men produced a scintillating first-half performance to effectively kill off the contest by the break.
The home side raced into a two-goal lead inside six minutes through an own goal from Nemanja Matic and close-range finish by Lucas Beraldo, both assisted by the impressive Bradley Barcola. Ernest Nuamah found the net with a low drive, but his goal was sandwiched by Goncalo Ramos’ double before half-time which put PSG 4-1 up.
Despite Lyon’s best efforts after the restart, Gianluigi Donnarumma stood firm to deny Rayan Cherki, Maxence Caqueret and Nigerian forward Gift Orban as PSG comfortably saw out the victory. The result extends Les Princes lead at the top to 11 points with six games remaining.
For Lyon, defensive frailties were again exposed as their 10-game unbeaten run came to an end. They must now regroup ahead of the Coupe de France final meeting with PSG on May 25th, while also chasing a five-point gap to the European places.
This victory marked Mbappe’s first non-appearance in over two months amid ongoing speculation over his future, as PSG continue their pursuit of an unprecedented quadruple.
