Lyon Fire Grosso After One Win In Seven Matches Leaves Team Rock Bottom

November 30, (THEWILL) – Former Italy international, Fabio Grosso, has been relieved of his duties as manager of struggling Ligue 1 side, Olympique Lyonnais, after just a single victory in his seven matches in charge, the club confirmed on Thursday.

Grosso was appointed manager in September after an impressive spell gaining promotion to Serie A with Frosinone. However, his time at Lyon has been chaotic, including suffering facial injuries following an attack on the team bus ahead of their aborted match at Marseille in October.

The 45-year-old secured his only competitive win just prior to the November international break, a 1-0 success away at Rennes. But a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to Lille on Wednesday, proved the final straw for Lyon’s hierarchy.

The result leaves Lyon rooted to the bottom of Ligue 1, five points from safety after 12 matches. Grosso departs along with his backroom staff, with Academy manager Pierre Sage placed in temporary charge ahead of Saturday’s tough trip to sixth-placed Lens.

Lyon will hope to revive their fortunes under new leadership, but face an uphill battle to avoid relegation after a dismal start to the 2023/2024 campaign.
