Luton Lockyer Discharged From Hospital After Heart Procedure

December 21, (THEWILL) – Tom Lockyer, captain of Luton Town football club, has been discharged from hospital and allowed to continue his recovery at home. This follows a successful medical procedure on Tuesday, to fit an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) device, after Lockyer suffered a cardiac arrest during Luton’s English Premier League match against Bournemouth last weekend.

The incident caused the match to be suspended, with the EPL confirming it will be replayed in full at a later date. Luton thanked the quick actions of Bournemouth’s medical staff and players, especially midfielder Philip Billing, who was first to reach Lockyer on the pitch and summon medical assistance. The club also praised its medical staff, for the emergency protocols that enabled Lockyer’s treatment and recovery.

The cardiac arrest brought back difficult memories of a similar on-pitch collapse Lockyer suffered during last season’s Championship play-off final, which also required urgent hospital treatment. However, Luton confirmed that medical tests this week revealed this latest incident had a different cause to the atrial fibrillation experienced previously.

Lockyer, his family and Luton Town expressed thanks for the huge outpouring of concern and supportive messages received from across the football community over the past week. The club said Lockyer’s courageous leadership will continue to inspire his teammates and colleagues as he supports the team during his rehabilitation.

Luton concluded by stating, “We’re so proud to have Locks as our captain and his leadership will continue from the sidelines where his courage will inspire his teammates, colleagues and supporters, starting on Saturday.”
