November 19, (THEWILL) – The Belgian national team earned a decisive 5-0 victory over Azerbaijan in a Euro 2024 qualifying match on Sunday, in Brussels. Striker, Romelu Lukaku, was the star of the show, netting an impressive four goals in the first half to lead his team to an easy win.
The match started off strangely, with the Swedish national anthem mistakenly played instead of Azerbaijan’s. However, Belgium quickly refocused, taking advantage of an early red card to Azerbaijani player Eddy Israfilov to score four goals within 37 minutes. Lukaku bagged a hat trick, while Leandro Trossard added a fifth goal late in the second half.
With the win, Belgium secures the top spot in Euro 2024 qualifying Group F with an unbeaten record under manager Domenico Tedesco. The team seems to have rediscovered its confidence after a poor showing at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Lukaku looked sharp and clinical in front of goal, bringing his international tally to 83.
Azerbaijan struggled to contain Belgium’s passing, movement and physicality up front. They finish fourth in the group with just seven points from eight matches.
While Belgium rested some regular starters, the remaining squad still had too much quality for Azerbaijan. Lukaku’s four goals are the most ever in a single Euro qualifying campaign. After this performance, Belgium looks ready to challenge for the Euro 2024 title.
