October 25, (THEWILL) – Atletico Madrid came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Real Sociedad at the Wanda Metropolitano with a Luis Suarez brace in the second half.
Alexander Sorloth finished off a slick, one-touch move to give La Real an early lead, before Alexander Isak extended their lead with a free-kick into the bottom-right corner shortly after the break. Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak will feel he could have done better for both Sociedad goals.
Suarez, on the other hand, gave Diego Simeone’s side a lifeline with a header and then levelled the score by winning and converting a penalty.
With the draw, Sociedad reclaims first place in La Liga, having been briefly displaced by Real Madrid, who trail by a point but have a game in hand. Atletico Madrid has moved up to fourth place.
The first goal came early in the seventh minute after the ball was won in midfield. Sorloth was there to add the finishing touch to a lightning-quick Sociedad attack, prodding past a hesitant Oblak, who came off his line too late.
Suarez then exchanged scoring chances with Sociedad’s David Silva, so that while the veteran midfielder tested Oblak with a sharp effort from a tight angle on the right, Suarez was quickly as the other end heading wastefully at Alex Remiro for Atletico shortly after.
Isak doubled La Real’s lead two minutes into the second half after Oblak was unable to keep out his low free-kick despite getting a hand to the ball.
Suarez equalised just after the hour mark, finding space in the box to deftly nod Joao Felix’s left-wing cross past Remiro before drawing a penalty from Mikel Merino, which he confidently converted, sending Remiro the wrong way to salvage a point for his team.
Despite letting their position of strength slip, the result allowed Sociedad to leapfrog Real Madrid at the top of the table.
On Thursday, Atletico Madrid will face Levante in a La Liga match on the road. Real Sociedad will also play Celta Vigo on Thursday.
