August 09, (THEWILL) – Julen Lopetegui has parted ways with Wolverhampton Wanderers, just days before the start of the new English Premier League season.
The sudden exit ends the Spaniard’s brief tenure at Molineux after less than a year in charge. Lopetegui was appointed last November with Wolves languishing in the relegation zone. The former Spain and Real Madrid manager guided the club to safety, stabilising results in the second half of the campaign. There were hopes he could build on those foundations this season.
However, tensions emerged over the lack of squad investment this summer. Lopetegui publicly voiced frustrations, feeling the club failed to match his ambitions in the transfer market. Wolves chairman, Jeff Shi, defended the prudent approach, citing financial sustainability as a priority.
The two parties were clearly at odds over the club’s direction. Last week, Shi assured fans work was underway to ensure “robustness and sustainability.” But the rift with Lopetegui proved irreparable, culminating in his departure days before the new season.
Wolves will now urgently seek a replacement, with former Bournemouth boss, Gary O’Neil, reported to be in the frame. Lopetegui’s reputation remains strong and he is unlikely to be short of job offers despite this unceremonious exit. Wolves kick off their season on Monday night with a tie against Manchester United at Old Trafford at 8:00 pm, local time.
