December 09, (THEWILL) – Ademola Lookman was the star of the show as Atalanta pulled off a dramatic 3-2 victory over AC Milan on Saturday, thanks to a last gasp winner from Luis Muriel. Lookman twice put the home side ahead, only for Milan to respond through Olivier Giroud and Luka Jovic. Still, a stoppage time red card for Rossoneri captain, Davide Calabria, proved pivotal, allowing Muriel to snatch the points with an audacious 95th minute backheel.
Lookman opened the scoring seven minutes before the interval, his shot taking a wicked deflection off Fikayo Tomori to loop over helpless goalkeeper Mike Maignan. However, Milan equalised before the interval through Giroud’s bullet header from a corner.
The seesaw nature of the contest continued after the break, with Lookman restoring Atalanta’s lead in the 55th minute. The Nigerian latched onto Matteo Politano’s low cross to fire home first time for his second of the afternoon. He later spurned a golden chance for his hat-trick that could have put the game to bed.
Still, the visitors refused to roll over, and Jovic punished Lookman’s miss by sweeping home the equaliser with 15 minutes remaining. However, the game hinged on Calabria’s stoppage time dismissal for a poor tackle, allowing Muriel to react quickest and flick the ball past Maignan from close range.
The victory ends a five-match winless run for Atalanta, who face Rakow Czestochowa in the Europa League next. Milan now switch focus to their crunch UEFA Champions League trip to Newcastle, where only a win will keep their faint knockout hopes alive.
