January 04, (THEWILL) – On Wednesday, Atletico Madrid comfortably secured their place in the last 16 of the Copa del Rey with a 2-0 victory over Real Oviedo at Estadio Calos Tartiere.
Despite having some strong opportunities, particularly in the first half, Oviedo was unable to find the Atletico net. Marcos Llorente scored the first goal for Atletico in the 24th minute, with Antoine Griezmann assisting with a brilliant pass.
In the second half, Atletico allowed Oviedo to have more possession, but the visitors still looked comfortable and managed to finish off the hosts through substitute, Pablo Barrios, in the final seven minutes of the game.
Atletico could have scored more but Alvaro Morata and Llorente failed to convert their chances and Oviedo’s Samuel Obeng, missed an opportunity to register a goal for the hosts.
Atletico confirmed their advancement to the next round of the Copa del Rey with the final whistle and will now turn their attention to La Liga where Barcelona awaits on Sunday. Meanwhile, a day before, Oviedo will travel to take on FC Andorra in La Liga 2.
