Liverpool Stay On City’s Trail With 3-1 Win Over Newcastle

December 17, (THEWILL) – With a 3-1 win over Newcastle at Anfield, Liverpool pulled back to within a point of league leaders Manchester City as Mohamed Salah once again scored the opening in another display of his fiery form.

Despite losing Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho, and Curtis Jones to positive COVID-19 test results, the Merseysiders won their eighth consecutive game in all competitions.

Former Liverpool player Jonjo Shelvey curled a superb 25-yard strike into the far corner to give the Magpies hope of a first league victory at Anfield since 1994.

Soon after, the hosts rallied with Diogo Jota’s 10th goal of the season, tying the game. Salah then put Liverpool ahead after Martin Dubravka had denied Sadio Mane. The Egyptian, by scoring, matched Jamie Vardy’s Premier League record of scoring or assisting a goal in 15 consecutive games.

The second half proved to be a more even affair but the Reds sealed the points three minutes from time when Trent Alexander Arnold unleashed a rocket into the top corner.

The defeat sees the Magpies remain in 19th spot and leaves them three points adrift of safety having played a game more than 17th-placed Watford.

They are scheduled to host champions Manchester City next on Sunday, while Liverpool is scheduled to visit Tottenham, but the next fixtures are becoming increasingly questionable due to the present situation with COVID-19 breakouts in the sport.
