Liverpool Leapfrog Spurs with Firmino’s Firm Header

Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino’s late header put Liverpool top of the Premier League table as Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur were beaten 2-1 at Anfield on Wednesday.

In a game that observed an emotional minute’s applause for late former boss Gerard Houllier, Liverpool started with great intensity and an unmarked Firmino’s downward header was picked up easily by Hugo Lloris, the Spurs keeper.

Though the ball struck centre back Eric Dier’s arm in the penalty area in the 22nd minute, no spot-kick was awarded, Salah picked up the loose ball only to shoot straight at Lloris. But, the impressive Egypt forward was at it again in the 26th minute to open the scoring with a shot that deflected in off Toby Alderweireld.

However, the lead lasted for seven odd minutes because against the run of play, Spurs managed to equalise amidst a dominant Liverpool display. Son received Giovani Lo Celso’s pass and exhibited a typical clinical finish which was confirmed after a VAR review.

Left winger Steven Bergwijn scuffed a glorious opportunity to give Spurs the edge just after the break when he shot wide off the far post after a momentary lapse from debutant teenage defender Rhys Williams.

Keeper Alisson Becker made up for his own error as he tipped away Harry Kane’s attempted dink after the Spurs captain collected his sloppy pass and looked to score.

Spurs were relentless as the second half progressed. Bergwijn’s measured shot struck the post after Son nodded on to put the Netherlands international clear while Kane nodded the ball over the crossbar when it was easier to have buried it.

At the other end, Liverpool almost took the lead. Mane’s sharp turn in the area allowed him drive a left-footed shot in but it was deflected to strike the top of the bar.

It was Firmino who came up with the goods to secure all three points with a bullet header into the net ensuring that Spurs ceded the top spot to the defending champions.

The Reds have now won seven out of seven in the Premier League at Anfield, where they are unbeaten in 66 top-flight matches.

Liverpool next head to the capital to face Crystal Palace on Saturday, while Spurs are home to Leicester City the following day.
