March 20, (THEWILL)- Liverpool Football Club have announced the appointment of Richard Hughes as their new Sporting Director, effective from June 1.
Hughes will take over responsibilities at the Merseyside club following the departure of Jürgen Klopp as manager at the conclusion of the 2023/2024 season.
The 44-year-old is currently the technical director at Bournemouth but will leave that role at the end of the current campaign after eight years in the position. Hughes enjoyed two playing spells at Bournemouth between 1998-2002 and 2012-2014 before transitioning into a backroom role.
Joining recently appointed CEO of Football, Michael Edwards, Hughes expressed excitement about the future at Liverpool. “It will be my job, working with Michael and leading the operations team, to make good decisions for the club moving forward,” he stated. Edwards believes Hughes is “the right person” to usher in a new era of success.
Klopp announced in January that he would step down as Liverpool manager this summer after eight trophy-winning years, citing a need to recharge. The club have moved swiftly to restructure, bringing in Edwards and now Hughes to shape their future direction.
Liverpool will be hoping the new leadership team can build on Klopp’s achievements and reinvigorate the squad ahead of the 2024/2025 campaign. The club’s American owners have backed the appointments as they target renewed glories under fresh management.
