November 29, (THEWILL) – Lionel Messi has won the Ballon d’Or for the seventh time, extending his record win of the most coveted individual prize in world football.

Lionel Messi had another outstanding individual season in his final season with the club before shockingly parting ways with the Catalan side due to financial constraints that prevented him signing a new contract.

However, it was a season that saw Messi become the first player in history to score at least 20 goals in 13 straight seasons in Europe’s top five divisions, as he also broke Pele’s record of most goals for a single club.

The 34-year-old also surpassed Xavi’s record for most Barca appearances and eclipsed Gerd Muller’s record of scoring 30 goals in 12 straight club seasons.

To top it off, Argentina defeated Brazil in the Copa America final with Messi finishing as joint-best player in the competition, while simultaneously ending his extended wait for his first big international title.
