February 10, (THEWILL) – Bayer Leverkusen continued their stunning unbeaten run in the Bundesliga with an emphatic 3-0 victory over champions Bayern Munich on Saturday. The win leaves Leverkusen five points clear at the top of the table as they close in on their first league title since 1993.
Leverkusen were dominant from the start at the BayArena, taking an early lead through loanee Josip Stanisic. The Croatian right-back poked home from close range after 18 minutes to give the hosts a deserved advantage.
Alejandro Grimaldo added a second goal shortly after half-time with an excellent finish, before Jeremie Frimpong sealed the win late on with Bayern throwing everyone forward. It was a ruthless counter-attacking display from Leverkusen. The Bavarian giants simply had no answer to Leverkusen’s intensity and energy throughout the contest.
A change in formation did little to stem the tide as Leverkusen swarmed forward looking for goals from kickoff. Manuel Neuer made several fine saves to keep the score down, but Leverkusen were dominant and Bayern lacked ideas in attack. Xabi Alonso has moulded a team that presses tirelessly when out of possession.
With the Bundesliga title race now firmly in their control, these are exciting times for Leverkusen as they seek a first league crown in over 30 years. Their talismanic wingers Moussa Diaby and Frimpong were a constant thorn in Bayern’s side during an emphatic victory.
