March 17, (THEWILL)- A maiden Bundesliga title is more likely for Bayer Leverkusen after a hard-fought 3-2 victory at Freiburg on Saturday. Florian Wirtz’s early strike set Xabi Alonso’s league leaders on their way before Adam Hlozek and Patrik Schick netted either side of half-time to restore their 10-point advantage over defending champions Bayern Munich.
The in-form hosts pegged Leverkusen back twice through Ritsu Doan and Yannik Keitel goals, but Die Werkself held firm to make it 23 games unbeaten this season. With just eight rounds remaining, the Bundesliga newcomers are now potentially only a month away from being crowned champions of Germany for the first time.
Leverkusen wasted no time asserting themselves in Freiburg, taking the lead after only two minutes through Wirtz’s cool finish. Despite Doan’s equaliser, they reclaimed the advantage before the break when Hlozek pounced on a loose ball. Schick’s delightful chip early in the second half made it 3-1 before Keitel set up a tense finale.
However, Alonso’s side saw out the win professionally to maintain their buffer over Bayern. With four home games still to come against lower half opposition, the stars are aligning for Leverkusen to finally end their ‘Neverkusen’ tag and land a historic first Bundesliga crown potentially before May.
