April 21, (THEWILL)- Borussia Dortmund came agonisingly close to ending Bayer Leverkusen’s 44-game unbeaten streak in all competitions. However, a 98th-minute header salvaged a 1-1 draw for Xabi Alonso’s side at the Signal Iduna Park.
The newly-crowned German champions, having conquered all opponents this season, faced their toughest challenge against Borussia Dortmund, the only team to have held them to a draw earlier in the campaign.
The match started with little action, with Marcel Sabitzer’s attempt saved by Lukáš Hrádecký being the closest either team came to scoring. Despite Dortmund’s defensive efforts, Leverkusen controlled the game and posed threats, resulting in yellow cards for Ian Maatsen and Emre Can, both now suspended for their next match against RB Leipzig.
As the second half progressed, Dortmund intensified their efforts, and a late goal from Füllkrug, assisted by Sabitzer, seemed to secure victory. Victor Boniface, substituted in for Piero Hincapie in the 83rd minute, was shown a red card in the 88th minute, a decision overturned by VAR.
With the clock ticking to the final whistle and deep in added time, Leverkusen’s Josip Stanišić found the equaliser with a header from a corner. The draw leaves Leverkusen’s unbeaten streak intact, posing a significant challenge for future opponents.
