September 07, (THEWILL) – After losing 4-1 at home to Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, Leipzig sacked coach Domenico Tedesco.
Last season, Tedesco guided Leipzig to its first major victory in its 13-year history, the German Cup. However, the Bundesliga season has not started well for Leipzig, and on Saturday, they were defeated 4-0 by Eintracht Frankfurt.
Referencing the progress made by the club under the manager’s guidance while announcing the decision, Oliver Mintzlaff, Leipzig’s Chief Executive said: “For this, Domenico and his coaching staff deserve our gratitude.
“However, after our mediocre start to the Bundesliga season with five points from five games, along with the recent defeats to Eintracht and Shakhtar, we believe that a change of management is the right course of action to turn things around quickly.”
Tedesco managed Russian team Spartak Moscow for two years before being appointed by Leipzig nine months ago. The forthcoming schedule for Leipzig includes a Bundesliga match against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday and a Champions League trip to the reigning champion Real Madrid the following Wednesday.
