November 04, (THEWILL) – Leeds United earned a statement 1-0 victory over Sky Bet Championship leaders, Leicester City, on Friday night, handing the Foxes just their second home defeat of the campaign. The win moves Leeds to within 11 points of the top two, as manager Daniel Farke’s side continue their push for promotion.
The only goal came in the 57th minute courtesy of striker, Georginio Rutter, who pounced on a rebound after Leicester keeper, Mads Hermansen, could only parry a Daniel James corner. It was a deserved lead for the visitors, who had the better of the chances in the first half. Abdul Fatawu hit the bar for Leicester, while Leeds were aggrieved not to be awarded a penalty when Crysencio Summerville went down in the box.
The match was a clash between the division’s two most recent Premier League sides, both relegated last season. However, Leeds showed no signs of being overawed, taking the game to Leicester from the off. The Foxes stuck to their principles even after falling behind, with manager Enzo Maresca making a double substitution on the hour mark in search of an equaliser with Kelechi Iheanacho.
The hosts piled on late pressure as they chased the leveller, but Leeds held firm with goalkeeper Illan Meslier producing a superb stoppage-time save to deny Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. In the end, it was a night for the visitors, whose victory leaves them well positioned to mount a serious promotion challenge this season.
For leaders Leicester, it is back to the drawing board after a performance well below their usual standards. Still, Maresca will be confident his side can bounce back from this minor setback, with an 11 point cushion still a significant advantage at this stage of the season.
