September 16, (THEWILL) – Lecce, who earned a promotion to Italy’s top division after lifting the Serie B trophy, triumphed 2-1 at Salernitana on Friday, marking the team’s first victory since moving back up.
In the 83rd minute of the all-southern game, Gabriel Strefezza netted the game-winning goal from beyond the penalty area after a quickfire counterattack.
Following their impressive 2-2 draw at Juventus, Salernitana went on the offensive looking to level the score. They got that equalizer with the help of Lecce player Joan Gonzàlez, who headed a corner into his own net.
But Lecce was to have the final laugh because, on a counterattack, Gambia forward Assan Ceesay gave the visitors the lead when he skillfully dribbled around the goalkeeper and found the back of the empty net from a tight angle.
The result sees Lecce rise to 14th in the standings while Salernitana remained in 10th place. On Sunday, October 2, they both compete in their upcoming games following the international break. Lecce will host Cremonese and Salernitana will travel to Sassuolo.
