January 28, (THEWILL) – LeBron James rolled back the years with a stellar triple-double performance to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a breathtaking 145-144 double-overtime victory, against Stephen Curry’s Golden State Warriors. The 39-year-old scored 36 points whilst also producing career-highs of 20 rebounds and 12 assists.
James kept his nerve to sink two decisive free throws with just a second left on the clock to clinch an unforgettable win for the Lakers, edging them above 500 to 24-23 for the campaign. “It’s something I’ll be able to talk about with my grandkids,” said James.
His opponent Curry was similarly sensational, pouring in 46 points in a losing cause after forcing overtime with a late lay-up. “We can’t imagine a scenario where a game like tonight happens”, admitted Curry.
Klay Thompson weighed in with 24 points for the Warriors, including a huge three-pointer to send the contest into a second overtime period. A stunning three from Curry then looked to have won it for the visitors but James held his nerve at the line.
Warriors coach Steve Kerr was left bemused by the officiating after his side shot just 16 free throws compared to 43 by the Lakers. “I want to be on my best behaviour so I’m not going to comment,” said Kerr.
The pulsating LA victory leaves the Warriors 19-24 whilst boosting the Lakers’ postseason ambitions.
