LeBron James Makes History As First-Ever To Score 40,000 NBA Career Points

March 03, (THEWILL)- Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James entered the history books once again on Saturday night, becoming the first player in NBA history to score 40,000 career points.

The 39-year-old, playing in his 21st season, achieved the feat with a scoop layup in the second quarter of the Lakers’ home match against the Denver Nuggets.

Needing just nine more points to reach the mammoth milestone, James used his signature spin move to create space from Denver’s Michael Porter Jr before putting the ball in the basket with his left hand. As the all-time leading scorer continued to set records, the sold-out Los Angeles crowd erupted into rapturous applause and gave the four-time MVP a standing ovation when he went to the bench.

Having broken Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s scoring record just over a year ago, the achievement cements James’ legacy as one of the greatest players the sport has ever witnessed. Despite being the oldest player in the league, he continues to perform at an elite level, averaging around 25 points per game in the 2022-2023 season as the Lakers battle for a playoff spot.

Drafted straight from high school, James has spent his iconic career defying expectations whilst pioneering positionless basketball. His remarkable versatility has seen the small forward secure four championship titles with three different franchises, as well as four season MVP awards.

With one year left on his Lakers contract, James has the option to test free agency in the 2024/2025 season or pen an extension to remain in Los Angeles. He is also among 41 names listed in USA Basketball’s Paris Olympics training roster, having last won gold at the London 2012 Games.

Whilst his next career move remains unclear, the Akron native’s scoring landmark undoubtedly marks another historic moment for one of basketball’s greatest-ever athletes. At 39 years of age, the King continues to reign supreme.
