Leaders Lyon Hit Six In Statement Victory Over Rivals Paris FC

November 06, (THEWILL) – Lyon proved they remain the team to beat in the French women’s top flight with a commanding 6-1 victory away to nearest challengers, Paris FC, on Sunday evening.

The rout allowed Lyon to open up a three-point lead at the summit of the Division 1 Féminine table. Although the new playoff format means that advantage may not prove decisive come the business end of the season, Lyon laid down a marker with their dazzling display.

Eugénie Le Sommer gave the visitors a dream start inside the opening minute, but Lyon were made to work hard for their win with Chiamaka Nnadozie in goal for Paris. The hosts rallied and equalised through Julie Dufour midway through the first half.

Ultimately, though, Lyon’s greater experience and strength in depth proved the difference. Ada Hegerberg marked her first start of the campaign with a brace, while substitute Lina Kadidiatou Diani also found the net late on. The woodwork denied the hosts on three occasions just after the interval.

The 6-1 scoreline was harsh on a competitive Paris side, but demonstrates why seven-time European champions Lyon remain the team to beat domestically. Boss Sonia Bompastor will be delighted with how her side coped with the challenge of what was termed the league’s “Clasico”.
