Late Vardy Double For Leicester Breaks Watford Resistance

November 25, (THEWILL) – Substitute Jamie Vardy proved the super-sub for Leicester City, scoring two late goals to give the Championship leaders a hard-fought 2-0 home win over Watford. The victory ended a three-match winless run for manager Enzo Maresca’s side.

After coming on in the 74th minute alongside Abdul Fatawu, Vardy initially missed an open goal but redeemed himself just two minutes later. He pounced on the rebound after Daniel Bachmann had parried Jannik Vestergaard’s header.

The 36-year-old then sealed the result in stoppage time, netting a penalty after being brought down by Bachmann, who was sent off for a second bookable offence.

The match had looked destined for a goalless draw as Watford soaked up pressure and tried hitting Leicester on the counter. Despite dominating possession and chances, the home side struggled to break down their opponents’ stubborn resistance. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall went closest in the first half while Kelechi Iheanacho and Stephy Mavididi wasted opportunities after the break.

As the game wore on Leicester became more dangerous. After Vardy’s twin strikes, Watford briefly threatened through Ryan Porteus, who had gone in goal after Bachmann’s red card. Still, Leicester held firm to claim an important victory that maintains their three-point lead atop the Championship. Manager Maresca will be relieved to get back to winning ways before a tough run of fixtures.
