December 06, (THEWILL) – Arsenal escaped Kenilworth Road with a dramatic 4-3 victory over Luton Town, thanks to a last-gasp winner from summer signing Declan Rice. The result sent the Gunners five points clear at the top of the English Premier League table, although the performance left much to be desired.
The visitors had twice taken the lead through Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus, only for resolute Luton to peg them back each time. However, two errors from Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya then gifted the hosts a shock lead as Elijah Adebayo and Ross Barkley capitalised.
Kai Havertz looked to have rescued a point for Arsenal with a calm finish, but the EPL leaders rallied in the dying moments. An Oleksandr Zinchenko cross was linked through Jesus and headed home by Rice to seal a thrilling victory for Mikel Arteta’s side.
The game encapsulated Arsenal’s season so far – moments of brilliance but also concerning lapses in concentration. Boss Arteta will be delighted with the character shown to recover late on but will know defensive improvement is still needed.
The result continues Arsenal’s fine form and sees them head into a busy festive period with a healthy lead at the summit. Rivals Manchester City and Liverpool will keep the chase going when they face Aston Villa and Sheffield United respectively on Wednesday.
