March 12, (THEWILL) – Paris Saint-Germain were forced to rely on Kylian Mbappe’s late heroics to secure a hard-fought 2-1 win against Brest late on Saturday.
The visitors looked set to suffer a hangover from their midweek European exertions as they struggled to break down a resolute Brest defence. Despite dominating possession, PSG were unable to create many clear-cut chances, with Marco Bizot in the Brest goal producing several fine saves to deny the likes of Mbappe and Lionel Messi.
It was Carlos Soler, who eventually broke the deadlock with a thunderous strike, but Brest hit back quickly through Franck Honorat’s stunning goal. As the game looked to be heading for a draw, Mbappe finally found a way past Bizot, latching onto Messi’s long ball and slotting home to secure all three points for PSG.
The win keeps PSG in the hunt for the Ligue 1 title, but they will need to improve on this performance if they are to catch leaders Lille. If they do not, the pressure will only keep piling on manager Christophe Galtier.
Brest, meanwhile, can take heart from a valiant display that saw them push PSG all the way. They will be hoping for a positive result when they face Troyes next, while PSG will host Rennes in their next league fixture.
