Late Leverkusen Comeback Against Hoffenheim Keeps Title Dream Alive

March 30, (THEWILL)- Bayer Leverkusen maintained their stunning form this season with a remarkable late comeback to defeat Hoffenheim 2-1 and extend their unbeaten run to 39 games across all competitions. Xabi Alonso’s side looked set for a first defeat since October before scoring in the 88th and 91st minutes to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Leverkusen fell behind against the run of play in the 33rd minute when Maximilian Beier slotted past Lukáš Hrádecký. The home side laid siege to the Hoffenheim goal after the break but Oliver Baumann made a string of fine saves to keep his side ahead.

With their remarkable unbeaten record on the line, Leverkusen finally broke through in the 88th minute as Robert Andrich volleyed home after Jonathan Tah’s knockdown. The turnaround was completed deep into stoppage time when Patrik Schick pounced to make it 2-1 and seal a 23rd win from 27 Bundesliga games this term.

The victory moves Leverkusen ever closer to a first-ever Bundesliga title, with Alonso having confirmed pre-match that he will remain as head coach next season. It continues an astonishing campaign for the team once dubbed the ‘Eternal Bridesmaids’ as they close in on a historic league triumph.
