March 18, (THEWILL) – Atalanta secured a hard-fought victory against Empoli in a draining Serie A clash on Friday.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s side had dropped points in four of their previous five matches, putting them at risk of falling out of the European spots.
Despite Empoli’s comfortable position in mid-table, they managed to take the lead just before half-time through Tyronne Ebuehi. However, Atalanta remained in control throughout the game and were eventually rewarded with an equaliser from Marten de Roon.
The home side continued to push for all three points and were finally able to find a winner in the 86th minute, with Rasmus Hojlund scoring the decisive goal. The victory keeps Atalanta’s hopes of a European finish alive, while Empoli will have to regroup after a valiant effort.
Neither team plays again until next month when Cremonese host Atalanta on Saturday, April 1. Empoli will also welcome Lecce to their home ground on Monday, April 3.
