February 10, (THEWILL) – Southampton scored two goals in the final three minutes of the second half to come from behind and defeat Tottenham 3-2 in north London.

The Saints made a good start and should have taken the lead after five minutes when Mohamed Elyounoussi delivered a pinpoint cross to Che Adams, but the striker could only volley straight at Hugo Lloris from close range.

After Cristian Romero’s goal was disallowed for offside, Harry Kane slid in Sergio Reguilon, but the Spaniard was stopped by Fraser Forster, who made himself huge to keep the strike from getting in.

Spurs grabbed control of the game and took the lead when Jan Bednarek diverted Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s cross past Forster.

But, thanks to some awful Tottenham defence, that advantage was shortly wiped out. Both Davinson Sanchez and Ben Davies failed to clear their lines, and the ball was eventually passed to Romain Perraud, who squared the ball for Armando Broja to tap in.

At halftime, the Tottenham players were welcomed with boos as Southampton pinned the hosts in, with Lloris making a succession of saves to keep the score at 1-1.

To earn all three points, Antonio Conte brought on new acquisitions Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski off the bench. As the Swede came on, Tottenham finally put together a period of excellent football, culminating in Lucas Moura crossing for Son to make it 2-1.

Spurs were dreadful for long stretches, making an alarming number of unforced errors, and they should have been pinned back when Broja burst through from nowhere, but the Albanian could only fire over.

The Saints, on the other hand, scored two identical goals in the final minutes to grab a 3-2 lead. Mohamed Elyounoussi levelled the game with a header from James Ward-Prowse’s brilliant cross, before the England midfielder picked up another assist, teeing up Che Adams to put the visitors ahead.

Substitute from injury time, Steven Bergwijn thought he had grabbed a point for Spurs, but the Dutchman had gone too far and had his strike ruled out by VAR.

The result sees Southampton climb up to 12th place in the Premier League rankings, while Tottenham remains in sixth place, three points behind the Champions League places.
