December 14, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United’s UEFA Champions League campaign ended in agonising fashion, as AC Milan came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory at a pulsating St James’ Park. Second half goals from Christian Pulisic and Samuel Chukwueze inflicted heavy despair on the hosts in Group F.
Joelinton had fired Newcastle ahead on 33 minutes, thrashing home a piledriver to raise the decibel levels on Tyneside. However, the Serie A giants showed their European pedigree after the break, equalising through Pulisic before Chukwueze netted a late winner.
The result sees Newcastle finish bottom of their group after injuries took their toll on Eddie Howe’s squad. Milan claim a Europa League spot but progress no further in the UCL, with Borussia Dortmund drawing 1-1 at PSG to top the pool.
Despite the vociferous home support, advancing in Europe proved a step too far for the Magpies against the seven-time champions. Yet, qualifying for the competition has capped a remarkable rise under Howe, even if this adventure ended in heartbreak.
Attention now turns back to domestic duties and the scramble for European places afresh. Still, the St James’ faithful will not forget this rollercoaster debut on the biggest club stage, despite a night ultimately ending in despair.
