December 13, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid survived a late comeback attempt to defeat Union Berlin 3-2 on Tuesday night and complete a perfect UEFA Champions League group stage campaign. Despite leading twice in the second half, Union Berlin rallied in the final minutes before a deflected Dani Ceballos strike in the 89th minute sealed the victory.
After Luka Modric’s missed penalty, the hosts took a surprising 1-0 lead into half-time after Kevin Volland capitalised on a defensive mistake. Real Madrid equalised in the second half when Joselu powered home a header. Joselu grabbed his second header just minutes later to put the visitors ahead.
Union Berlin refused to go quietly though. A thunderous strike from Alex Kral in the 85th minute made it 2-2 and set up a dramatic finish. Still, Ceballos managed to score in the 89th minute as his shot took a deflection and trickled past the goalkeeper.
The result sees Real Madrid finish Group C with six wins from six matches. They now await the round of 16 draw as they look to reclaim their European crown. Union Berlin’s European campaign comes to an end, but they impressed over two legs against the Spanish giants.
