Kuje Jailbreak: Fleeing Inmate Recaptured In Niger

July 11, (THEWILL) – Operatives of the Niger State Police Command have arrested Kazeem Murtala, one of the fleeing inmates, who escaped during the recent jailbreak at the Kuje Medium Security Correctional Centre in Abuja.

THEWILL reported that suspected terrorists had on Tuesday, attacked the custodial centre and freed over 800 inmates including members of the boko haram and Islamic State West African Province, (ISWAP).

The Federal Government had on Friday, declared 69 of the inmates, who had terror-related charges wanted with their names and other details published.

A statement by DSP Wasiu Abiodun, Spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command, said a patrol team on surveillance between the General Hospital, Suleja and Bakassi, arrested the fugitive on July 9, at 8:30p.m.

“Based on credible intelligence, the police patrol team stormed an identified compound and arrested one Kazeem Murtala, aged 54.

“During interrogation, the inmate confessed that he escaped from Kuje Correctional Centre during the attack and had been in custody for two years for an offence he committed”, he said.

Meanwhile, Niger State Police Commissioner, Monday Bala Kuryas, has commended the efforts of the patrol team.

Kuryas, who directed that the inmate be handed back to the custodial centre, equally appreciated members of the public for giving useful intelligence that facilitated the arrest of the fugitive.
