June 23, (THEWILL) – As pressure mounts on Hansi Flick, the head coach of the German national football team, to turn around their disappointing performance, fans and media alike have turned their attention to Jurgen Klopp as a potential saviour.

Following Germany’s lacklustre 2-0 defeat to Colombia in Gelsenkirchen, coupled with a 1-0 loss against Poland and a 3-3 draw with Ukraine, calls for Flick’s dismissal have grown louder. German newspaper Bild has gone so far as to demand the German Football Association (DFB) take action, arguing that the team’s recent track record of only four wins in the last 16 matches necessitates a change before the European Championship, just a year away.

Matthias Brugelmann, the sports editor of Bild, has emerged as one of the most vocal critics, advocating for the appointment of Klopp as the new national team coach. Brugelmann asserts that Klopp’s leadership would inject much-needed enthusiasm into the team and generate “Euros euphoria” among supporters. In an online poll conducted by Bild, Klopp received an overwhelming 47% of the vote, leaving former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann in a distant second with 17%, and Flick trailing behind at 11%.

While DFB president Bernd Neuendorf has expressed support for Flick, confirming his position for the upcoming friendlies against Japan and France in September, a disappointing performance in these matches could intensify the clamour for change. If Flick’s position becomes untenable, it is widely believed that Jurgen Klopp would be the DFB’s preferred choice.

The vice-president of the DFB, Hans-Joachim Watzke, who has previously worked with Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, is known to be keen on seeing Klopp take the helm of the national team. Additionally, Klopp’s popularity among Germany fans remains high, fueled by his underdog success story at Mainz, his charismatic personality, and his achievements at Dortmund and Liverpool.
