Kipyegon Adds Third World Record To Her Sensational Season

July 22, (THEWILL) – Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon continues to make headlines with her outstanding performances on the track, achieving yet another milestone at the Monaco Diamond League meet.

Kipyegon, a decorated athlete with two Olympic gold medals and two world championship titles in the 1500m, shattered the women’s mile world record on Friday, clocking an impressive 4 minutes and 07.64 seconds. This remarkable achievement marks her third world record of the season, having already set new records in the 1500m and 5000m events earlier in June.

Kipyegon’s dominance was on full display as she obliterated the previous world record of 4:12.33, held by Ethiopian-born Dutch runner, Sifan Hassan, since 2019, also at the Monaco meet. The ideal running conditions, with a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius and the support of an on-the-mark pace-setting and the Wavelight trackside lighting system indicating world record pace, certainly played a role in her extraordinary feat.

Taking the lead with two laps to go, Kipyegon exhibited flawless form and determination, crossing the finish line in triumph. The exhilarating race not only saw Kipyegon’s triumphant victory but also set regional records for North America, South America, and Oceania. Additionally, national records were achieved for Ireland, with Ciara Mageean securing second place, and Britain, with Laura Muir, finishing in fourth position.

Ethiopia’s Freweyni Hailu, an Olympic silver medallist in the 1500m, claimed the third spot on the podium, adding further depth to the fiercely competitive field.
