July 02, (THEWILL) – Former Nigerian footballer, Nwankwo Kanu, has been appointed as the new chairman of Enyimba Football Club, replacing long-serving chairman, Felix Anyansi-Agwu.

The appointment was made by the Abia State Government, bringing an end to Anyansi-Agwu’s 24-year reign as the club’s chairman. Although Anyansi-Agwu is reportedly determined to hold on to his position, players and officials of Enyimba are looking forward to working under Kanu, a two-time Africa Player of the Year winner. Kanu, who enjoyed a successful career playing for clubs like Ajax, Inter Milan, Arsenal, West Bromwich Albion, and Portsmouth, will now lead Enyimba in the upcoming CAF Champions League and aims to secure their tenth Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title.

Under the leadership of Anyansi-Agwu, Enyimba registered remarkable success, emerging as one of Africa’s most accomplished teams. During his tenure, Enyimba won the NPL title a record nine times and clinched the African Champions League trophy twice, in 2003 and 2004. The recent appointment of Nwankwo Kanu, as the new chairman, has seen Anyansi-Agwu making every effort to retain his position.

While the reasons behind this decision remain unknown, the players and officials of Enyimba are eagerly anticipating the arrival of the football legend and are excited about the prospects of working under his leadership. Nwankwo’s appointment as the new chairman of Enyimba Football Club will reunite him with former international teammate, Finidi George. THEWILL recalls that both players were part of the historic Ajax squad that won the UEFA Champions League in 1995.

Kanu, who began his professional career with Iwuanyanwu Nationale, captained Nigeria to an Olympic gold medal in 1996 before embarking on a successful club career in Europe. As a member of Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles,’ Kanu played a crucial role in the team’s unbeaten season in the English Premier League. Now, he aims to guide Enyimba to success in the upcoming CAF Champions League and lead them to their tenth NPFL title.
