July 25, (THEWILL) – In a decisive move to reclaim their position in the Nigeria Premier League, Kano Pillars has announced the appointment of Abdullahi Maikaba as their new head coach.
The club, popularly known as Sai Masu Gida, faced relegation at the end of the 2021/2022 season due to a three-point deduction following an incident involving match officials during a game against Dakkada. However, under the guidance of Evans Ogenyi, they swiftly earned promotion back to the top tier and have now entrusted Maikaba, a seasoned coach with a wealth of experience, to lead them to their former glory.
“I will do my best to return the club to winning ways if given the support by the government,” Maikaba declared, expressing his dedication to revitalising the team during the unveiling ceremony where he was handed a two-year contract on Monday.
Babangida Little, the club chairman, hailed the appointment as a momentous occasion for Kano Pillars and pointed to the significance of showing respect to the new head coach. “The unveiling is like a ritual for us. Maikaba is one of our own, and we must give him the respect,” he stated, highlighting the deep-rooted connection between the club and their new coach.
The 58-year-old Maikaba, with a storied domestic career, has previously served as an assistant coach at the Sani Abacha Stadium and has managed reputable clubs like Wikki Tourists, Akwa United, Plateau United, and Enugu Rangers. He has vowed to bring back the club’s illustrious past, with their last championship title dating back to 2014.
