May 23, (THEWILL) – Kano State House of Assembly, on Thursday, passed the Kano Emirate Councils Law (Repeal Bill) 2024, after scaling 3rd reading.
The law has, therefore, abrogated the establishment of 5 new Emirates in the state.
All offices established under the repealed law have also been set aside by the new bill.

By this development, all the five Emirs and their officers, appointed by the previous administration in the state have been technically dethroned.
The Emirs are those of Kano, Rano, Gaya, Karaye and Bichi.
The Assembly’s action also means that Kano will revert to the Status Quo Ante – one Emirate, ruled by one Emir, if the Bill is signed into law.
The Deputy Speaker of the House, Alhaji Muhammad Bello Butu, explained that repealing the law would revive the lost glory of Kano as the division of Kano Emirate into five had reduced the capacity and dignity of the state at the national level.
Meanwhile, the atmosphere in Kano and its environs is charged, as the residents await the signing of the Bill into law by Governor Abba Yusuf.
Speculations are also high in the state as to who the Governor will appoint as the new Emir of Kano.
