August 12, (THEWILL) – Harry Kane had a debut to forget after Bayern Munich suffered a shocking 3-0 defeat at the hands of RB Leipzig in the DFL-Supercup late on Saturday.
Played at the Allianz Arena in Munich, the match saw the reigning Bundesliga champions fall behind early and fail to recover. Just four minutes into the match, Dani Olmo opened the scoring for Leipzig with a well-taken goal from a set-piece situation. Despite having the majority of possession in the first half, Bayern could not find an equaliser before the break. On the stroke of halftime, Olmo struck again with a skilful individual effort to double Leipzig’s advantage.
The second half saw Bayern push for a way back into the match, but a controversial penalty converted by Olmo to complete his hat trick in the 67th minute all but sealed the result. Thomas Tuchel introduced new Bayern signing Kane into the match in the 63rd minute but even he was unable to spark a comeback for the hosts.
Leipzig comfortably held onto their lead for the remainder of the match, limiting the Munich attack and staying organised defensively until the final whistle. It was a disappointing performance from Bayern, who failed to match Leipzig’s energy and intensity throughout the contest.
The loss raises questions for Tuchel and his squad as they head into the new Bundesliga campaign next weekend. Meanwhile, Leipzig will take confidence from their statement victory over the perennial German champions. The Bavarian club will need to regroup quickly, as they look to bounce back in their Bundesliga opener against Werder Bremen on Friday.
