March 16, (THEWILL) – Juventus secured their place in the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over Freiburg, thanks to a Dusan Vlahovic penalty and a stoppage-time goal from Federico Chiesa.
Despite having the advantage from the first leg, Juventus were missing some key players due to injury and were unable to assert their dominance until the second half.
The game had a controversial moment when a penalty was awarded to Juventus after VAR showed that a shot from Federico Gatti had been blocked by Manuel Gulde’s raised arm. This also resulted in Gulde’s second yellow card and the subsequent penalty was converted by Vlahovic.
Freiburg were reduced to 10 men after this incident, making it even more difficult for them to get back into the game. Then, Chiesa came off the bench to score a second goal, ensuring their place in the quarter-finals.
Juventus will face Inter Milan in their next Serie A match, while Freiburg travel to Mainz in the Bundesliga with both matches scheduled for Sunday.
