BEVERLY HILLS, April 17, (THEWILL) – The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has barred parents from the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) centres.
The body also said applicants between 14 and 15-year-old are not qualified to take the examination.
JAMB’s Registrar, Professor Is’haq Oloyede, made these known in a statement on Friday.
He was said to have taken the decision after inspecting some of the JAMB registration centres in Kwara, which were overcrowded.
“CBT Centres across the country will not allow parents/guardians into the registration hall again,” he said.
The 2021 UTME and Direct Entry registration began on April 8 and would end on May 15.
The Registrar said it had been discovered that the parents/guardians were always a distraction to both candidates and the centres and at the same time, congesting the halls by not following the COVID-19 protocols.
He advised parents/guardians to stop pushing the education of their wards faster than necessary.
“For example, a 14 or 15-year-old is not mature enough to undergo the process of registration and university pressure and are vulnerable to exploitation by scammers out there,” he said.
Oloyede also advised states’ Ministries of Education and relevant stakeholders to always ascertain the students’ true age before admittance into secondary schools.
The examination body said, “The new modalities are a clear departure from what obtained in the past, where it was mandatory for private candidates to collect their certificates or Attestation of Results from the WAEC office in the state where they sat the examination. With this new initiative, candidates can apply and collect their Certificates or Attestation of Results (both School and Private Candidates) from any WAEC office of their choice in Nigeria.
“Modalities for Collection of Attestation of Results and Certificates (Private Candidates) are as follows:
“For Attestation of Results, candidates are required to make their requests from any office of the Council and pay a non-refundable fee for the service.
“For collection of certificates, candidates are to make their requests from any office of the Council and pay the prescribed fee;
“Candidates must state clearly the preferred office of collection of the printed Attestation of Result or Certificate and would be required to pay for courier service for delivery to the chosen location.
“Candidates’ contact details (Mobile Phone Number and E-mail Address) must be provided at the point of request.”
