July 07, (THEWILL) – Ons Jabeur defeated Germany’s Tatjana Maria in three sets to advance to the Wimbledon final, writing another momentous page in her extraordinary career.
In this matchup between two close friends who made the semi-finals for the first time in their careers, there was just enough for only one player to continue their extraordinary Wimbledon journey to Saturday, as both both professionals had the chance to advance to their first Grand Slam final.
There was more in it for both, as Jabeur was aiming to become the first Arab or North African to compete in a major final, while the 34-year-old Maria wanted to become just the second mother to win Wimbledon during the Open era after Evonne Goolagong Cawley.
In the end, it was to be Jabeur’s day, as the Tunisian number three seed prevailed 6-2 3-6 6-1 to secure a spot in the final against either 2019 champion Simona Halep or number 17 seed Elena Rybakina, whose semifinal is scheduled to begin right after on Centre Court.
The two friends shared a lengthy embrace at the end when the match ended and Jabeur made sure Maria had her fair share of the ovation from Centre Court as the latter’s extraordinary run came to an end.
