September 09, (THEWILL) – The Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers were the perfect foil with which the Italian football squad wrapped a piece of football history as they set a new all-time record of 37 matches without defeat in their 5-0 bashing of Lithuania on Wednesday night.
A brace from Juventus forward Moise Kean helped them pile on the goals to hit Lithuania with five unreplied goals in another seamless display by the current champions of Europe as they continued their fine vein of form against all opponents they have encountered.
By last weekend, Roberto Mancini’s side had already equalled the unbeaten record of Brazil, set between 1993 and 1996, with their 0-0 draw against Switzerland. They moved the bar on Wednesday to go clear of the Selecao in some style at Mapei Stadium, Citta del Tricolore in Italy.
Lithuania stood no chance, which was obvious by the interval courtesy of Kean’s double either side of an own goal from Edgaras Utkus and Giacomo Raspadori’s maiden international strike as the visitors were 4-nil down at halftime.
Italy added to that score through Giovanni Di Lorenzo early in the second half to see the Azzurri move onto 14 points at the summit of Group C. They are not six points clear of second-placed Switzerland after six matches with two fixtures left of the group stage.
