October 24, (THEWILL) – Italian giants Inter Milan continued their unbeaten start in UEFA Champions League Group D on Tuesday evening, defeating Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg 2-1 at the San Siro.
The home side took the lead against the run of play in the 19th minute, Alexis Sanchez finishing off a neat move involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Davide Frattesi. However, Oscar Gloukh equalised for Salzburg in the 57th minute after good work from Maurits Kjaergaard.
Inter were soon back in front though, Hakan Calhanoglu converting a penalty after Frattesi was fouled in the area by Lucas Gourna-Douath. The Nerazzurri held on to take the three points.
The win builds on Inter’s strong domestic form, having beaten Torino 3-0 last Saturday in Serie A. Manager Simone Inzaghi will be delighted with his side’s resilience against talented opponents.
Salzburg had started brightly and took the game to Inter in the opening stages. However, the Italians grew into the match and deserved the victory on the balance of play. They top Group D after three matches.
