Inter Whip Atalanta 4-Nil, Open Up 12-Point Serie A Lead

February 29, (THEWILL) – Inter Milan continued their dominant march towards a 20th Serie A title on Wednesday, with a comfortable 4-0 home victory over UEFA Champions League hopefuls Atalanta. The win extends Inter’s lead at the top of the table to 12 points over second-placed Juventus with 12 matches remaining.

Inter opened the scoring in the 26th minute through defender Matteo Darmian, who pounced on a spilled save from Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi. Striker Lautaro Martinez then doubled the hosts’ lead on the stroke of half-time with a stunning left-footed strike from the edge of the box.

After the break, Inter extended their advantage when Federico Dimarco buried the rebound after Carnesecchi had saved a penalty taken by Martinez. The scoring was rounded off in the 71st minute as substitute Davide Frattesi headed home at the back post from fellow sub Alexis Sanchez’s quick free kick.

It was a dominant display from Serie A leaders Inter, who have now won 22 of their 26 league matches this campaign while conceding just 12 goals. Atalanta struggled to contain the hosts’ attacking talent and missed the chance to overtake Bologna into fourth place.

With 12 games remaining, Inter appear on course to claim their first Scudetto since 2020/2021 as they close in on domestic glory.
