September 03, (THEWILL) – Inter Milan put in a dominant performance on Sunday, to thrash Fiorentina 4-0 at the San Siro, a comprehensive victory that sent them top of Serie A, level on points with city rivals AC Milan.
The first half was one-way traffic as Inter peppered the Fiorentina goal. They eventually made the breakthrough when summer signing, Marcus Thuram, headed home from close range. It was the Frenchman’s first goal for his new club since joining from Borussia Monchengladbach.
After the break, Inter stepped up a gear and quickly doubled their advantage. Lautaro Martinez applied a precise finish after being set up by Thuram. It was the turn of Hakan Calhanoglu to add his name to the scoresheet from the penalty spot after Thuram was brought down in the box by keeper Oliver Christensen.
Martinez completed his brace late on by firing into the roof of the net from Juan Cuadrado’s cross to round off a perfect evening for Inter. They have now won all three of their opening Serie A fixtures without conceding a goal.
Fiorentina offered little in response to a difficult trip to Milan. The heavy loss leaves them down in 8th place with just one win from three matches. After the international break, they will hope to get more points on the table when they host Atalanta while there is the first Milan Derby to look forward to at the other end with Inter and Milan locked at the summit on nine points apiece.
