Inter Start Season With Martinez Brace In 2-0 Over Newly Promoted Monza

August 20, (THEWILL) – Inter Milan kicked off their Serie A campaign on a high note, defeating newly promoted Monza 2-0, at the San Siro on Saturday.

Although several key departures marked this summer for Inter, the Nerazzurri showed they still have the quality to compete at the top of the table. They controlled possession early and eventually broke through in the 8th minute. Monza attempted to play out from the back but were under pressure from Inter’s press. Nicolò Barella intercepted a poor pass and flicked the ball to Denzel Dumfries, who provided a low cross for Lautaro Martinez to tap home at the far post.

Inter continued to threaten Monza’s goal after half-time but saw several chances go begging. The visitors began to grow into the game but were unable to find an equaliser. In the 76th minute, Inter sealed the result when Marko Arnautovic, making his debut after joining from Bologna, got down the left flank and rolled the ball across for Martinez to score his second.

New signings Yann Sommer and Marcus Thuram made their first starts for Inter and put in solid debut performances. Despite a few nervous moments late on, Sommer made key saves to keep a clean sheet. The win will breed confidence for Inter as they look to reclaim the Scudetto after finishing third last season.

Based on the performance today, Inter appear poised for another successful campaign under Simone Inzaghi. Their attack looks as dangerous as ever even after losing key players this summer. Up next, Inter travel to take on Cagliari on Monday while Monza host Empoli on Saturday.
