September 21, (THEWILL) – Inter Milan were outplayed for most of their UEFA Champions League match away to Real Sociedad, on Tuesday, but managed to grab a 1-1 draw, thanks to a late goal from Lautaro Martinez.
The Italian side went behind after just 4 minutes when a poor pass from Alessandro Bastoni was seized upon by Brais Mendez, who finished calmly past Inter keeper Yann Sommer. Real Sociedad controlled the game from that point on, with Mikel Oyarzabal and Takefusa Kubo both hitting the woodwork before half-time.
The second half saw more Sociedad pressure, with Sommer making several good saves to keep his team in the match. Inter manager Simone Inzaghi made changes to try and spark his lifeless team, including bringing on Marcus Thuram, Federico Dimarco and Davide Frattesi.
Controversy erupted when Nicolò Barella was initially shown a straight red card for a foul on Mendez, but VAR intervened and the decision was overturned. Sociedad continued to press for a second goal, with Alexander Merino going close. Against the run of play, Inter grabbed an equaliser with Lautaro Martinez turning in a wayward Davide Frattesi shot from close range.
The late goal means both teams pick up a point from an entertaining match. In their next UCL matches, Real Sociedad travel to FC Salzburg while Inter Milan host Benfica at the San Siro. Before then, on Sunday, Sociedad host Getafe and inter travel to Empoli.
