January 20, (THEWILL) – Inter Milan remain on track to lift the Supercoppa Italiana trophy for the third consecutive year after dismantling Lazio 3-0 in the semi-finals in Riyadh on Thursday.
The Serie A leaders produced a dominant display and will now face defending Italian champions Napoli in Monday’s final after the Neapolitans cruised past Fiorentina 3-0 on Wednesday. Goals from Marcus Thuram, Hakan Calhanoglu and Davide Frattesi earned a comfortable victory for Inter in an extremely one-sided clash.
Inter started brightly and carved out several decent chances in the opening minutes through Thuram and Nicolo Barella. The opener came in the 17th minute, Thuram tapping home after a low cross from Federico Dimarco took four Lazio defenders out of the equation. Inter continued to pepper the Lazio goal before half-time, with chances falling to Matteo Darmian, Lautaro Martinez and Barella, whose volley crashed against the bar. Incredibly, Lazio trailed by just one goal at the interval.
The game was put beyond Lazio five minutes after half-time though, when Calhanoglu clinically converted a penalty after Lautaro Martinez was fouled in the box. Martinez later struck the bar and drilled just wide as Inter threatened to run riot. The result was put beyond doubt in the 87th minute, with substitute Davide Frattesi finishing off a counterattack to make it 3-0.
Inter will now seek their third consecutive Supercoppa title when they meet Napoli on Monday night in Riyadh. The emphatic semi-final victory demonstrates they have the quality to achieve Italian football’s first-ever Supercoppa three-peat.
