September 04, (THEWILL) – Inter Miami pulled off an impressive 3-1 victory over reigning Major League Soccer champions, LAFC, on Sunday evening, at BMO Stadium.
Goals from Facundo Farias, Leonardo Campana and Jordi Alba propelled the Herons closer to a coveted playoff position. LAFC started bright, carving through the Inter Miami backline with ease to test goalkeeper Drake Callendar early on. However, the Herons ruthlessly capitalised on their first real opportunity, as Farias combined with Tomas Aviles down the right before slotting home confidently.
Despite relentless pressure from the hosts, Inter Miami held firm to take a slender lead into the break. The Herons quickly strengthened their grip after the restart, as Alba doubled their advantage by beating John McCarthy in a one-on-one situation after a sumptuous defence-splitting pass from Lionel Messi.
Ecuadorian Campana then sealed an emphatic win late on, sweeping home after a scintillating run from Messi before supplying the unmarked Campana to finish. Although LAFC grabbed a consolation through Ryan Hollingshead, it was too little, too late.
The victory moves Inter Miami to within touching distance of the playoffs. They will now turn their attention to sustaining their push in the coming weeks, beginning with a home tie against Sporting KC on Sunday. LAFC play on the same day away to Portland.
