December 13, (THEWILL) – Inter Milan were held to a 0-0 draw by Real Sociedad on Tuesday night, failing to get the victory they needed to top UEFA Champions League Group E. With the sides level on points coming into the match, Inter needed a win due to their inferior goal difference but will now enter the knockout stage as Group D runners-up.
Playing at the San Siro stadium in Milan, Inter dominated possession and chances throughout the match but were ultimately left frustrated as they failed to find a breakthrough. They will now face a tougher Round of 16 opponent after finishing behind surprise group winners Sociedad.
Inter came close on several occasions, with Alexis Sanchez and Federico Dimarco both testing the Sociedad goalkeeper. Late substitute Lautaro Martinez also nearly won it when his acrobatic effort clipped the post in stoppage time.
In the end, a share of the points suited group leaders Bayern Munich best, as they progress as group winners. Inter will need to quickly shift their focus with a Serie A clash against Lazio coming up on Sunday.
Manager Simone Inzaghi will be disappointed his side could not capitalise on their dominance. Yet, with Italian league contenders Juventus showing no signs of slowing down in their chase, Inter need to quickly move on from this European setback to stay top of Serie A.
