BEVERLY HILLS, February 04, (THEWILL) – A political group, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Youth Frontier has kicked against the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration’s implementation of the proposed hike in electricity tariff, describing the move as anti-people and illogical.
In a statement signed on Thursday by its National Coordinator, Mr. Usman Okai Austin, PDP Youth Frontier observed that plans to increase electricity tariff has deepened the hardship faced by Nigerians, ascribing the move to poor and bad economic policies by the federal government.
“We advised that the Buhari-led government should ensure an improvement in electricity supply first as increase in tariff, establishment of various taxes without justification among others will only compound the sufferings of Nigerians,” the group stated.
Recall that the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, had on Tuesday justified the 45 percent increment in electricity tariff which takes effect from this month by explaining that the action remained the only way to enhance stable power supply in the country.
He disclosed that the increased cost of procuring raw materials to generate electricity was part of the reasons for increasing the tariff and that the best way to sustain the current stable power supply in the country was for there to be a hike.
