Improve Your Farming Standards – Ambode Urges Pig Farmers

BEVERLY HILLS, November 12, (THEWILL) – The Governor of Lagos, Akinwunmi Ambode, has urged Pig Farmers in the country to improve on the standards of farming pigs and apply discipline and commitment to the business.

He made this known at the 2nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Association for Promotion of Piggery in Nigeria (APPN), in Lagos, with the theme: Piggery Value Chain Development in Nigeria: Challenges and opportunities for stakeholders.

He revealed that the Lagos State Government is currently building a 3rd estate of piggery in Mowo, Badagary to enhance pig farming and improve the nutrition of pigs.

On his part, Dipo Sofowora, Chairman APPN Board of Trustees, observed that pig farming is lucrative but its profitability depends on many factors including feeding, management and environment.

He declared that pig farmers do not benefit a lot from the government as other farmers such as poultry farmers saying a major challenge for pig farmers is the availability of affordable standardized feed for farmers.

He called on pig farmers to integrate ICT in marketing for pigs saying there is poor awareness or publicity for pork consumption in the country.

He decried the dependence of pig farmers on waste and sub-standard feeds for pigs and urged the Government to engage with farmers to tackle the issues of feeding for farmers to be able to buy standard feed such as grains and addictives.

In attendance were members of the Association, including the President of the Gberigbe Piggery Estate, Barrister Funmi Adeshina; Mrs. Lawrence–Azua Oluwabukola Olayemi and Dr Olupona Johnson Ayodeji, Head of Department, Animal production, Federal College of Animal health and production technology, Ibadan.
